Japan is located in northeastern Asia between the North Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan. In terms of size (377,864 square kilometers), Japan is nearly equivalent to Germany and Switzerland combined or slightly smaller than the U.S. State of California. Japan consists of four main islands and surrounded by more than 4000 smaller islands. The country's topographical features include coastlines with varied scenery, such as towering and volcanic mountains, forests and valleys.
The Japanese government is very keen to attract more international students. As a result, universities are introducing more courses taught partly or entirely in English and recruiting overseas professors. There is also an increase in exchange programs with universities in other countries. Universities aim to assist international students more, from the application process all the way through to looking for a job after graduation. More than 300,000 international students enrolled in Japan in 2019, and the number is expected to grow continuously.
Japan's climate is mostly temperate with four seasons, except for the Okinawa and Hokkaido area. The main island Honshu, including Tokyo and Osaka, has a humid subtropical climate with warm and wet summers and moderate winters.
